Subdivision schemes to obtain refined meshes of subdivision surfaces consisting of both quadrilateral (quads) and triangles are investigated. A subdivision surface is obtained by iterative refinement of an initial control mesh (polyhedron). It is shown that a quad/triangle subdivision scheme can be derived from a nonhomogeneous refinement equation and the basis functions at quad/triangle vertices are integer shifts of the refinable functions associated with nonhomegeneous refinement equation. The authors introduce the analytical expression of a subdivision limiting surface as a linear combination of the shifts of the refinable functions. Moreover, a polynomial reproduction of quad/triangle schemes is presented and a few new quad/triangle schemes are constructed. The obtained results can be used in applications where a high visual quality of the displayed surface is required.
