The author considers the operator exponential \(e^{-tA}\), \(t>0\), with a selfadjoint positive definite operator \(A\) corresponding to the diffusion equation in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with measurable 1-periodic coefficients. The main goal of the paper is to approximate that operator exponential in the operator norm \(\|\cdot\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) \to L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}\) with order \(O(t^{-\frac{m}{2}})\) as \(t\to \infty\), where \(m\) is an arbitrary natural number. In constructing the approximations, the homogenized parabolic equation with constant coefficients is used, the order of which depends on \(m\) and is greater than \(2\) when \(m>2\). A collection of 1-periodic functions \(N_\alpha(x)\), \(x \in \mathbb{R}^n\), is also used with \(| \alpha | \leqslant m, \) which are solutions to certain elliptic problems on the periodicity cell. The results obtained are applied in homogenization of the diffusion equation with \(\varepsilon\)-periodic coefficients where \(\varepsilon\) is a small parameter. In particular, under minimal regularity conditions, the author constructs approximations of order \(O(\varepsilon^m)\) in the \(L^2\)-norm as \(\varepsilon \to 0\).
