The main result is that \(\ell_p\) is neither a uniform quotient, nor a Lipschitz quotient of a subset, of \(\ell_q\) when \(1<p<q<\infty\). The same relationship holds between \(c_0\) and any Banach space with Rolewicz's property \((\beta)\). It is also shown, for \(1<p<2\), that any uniform quotient of \(\ell_p\) must be a linear quotient thereof. This complements the corresponding result for \(L_p(0,1)\), established by \textit{S. Bates} et al. [Geom. Funct. Anal. 9, No. 6, 1092--1127 (1999; Zbl 0954.46014), Corollary 3.7].
