Let \(M\) be an arbitrary von Neumann algebra with center \(Z(M)\) and denote by \(LS(M)\) the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with \(M\). Let \(E(M)\) denote the set of all those elements \(x\) from \(LS(M)\) for which there exists a family (\(z_i\)) of mutually orthogonal central projections in \(Z(M)\) with \(\sup z_i =1\) such that \(z_i x\in M\) for all \(i\). It is known that \(E(M)\) is a subalgebra in \(LS(M)\) which is called the central extension of \(M\), and, moreover, \(E(M)\) coincides with \(LS(M)\) if and only if \(M\) does not have direct summands of type II [\textit{Sh. A. Ayupov} and \textit{K. K. Kudaybergenov}, J. Oper. Theory 67, No. 2, 495--510 (2012; Zbl 1263.46057)]. In the present paper, the authors describe classes of von Neumann algebras for which the algebra \(E(M)\) coincides with the von Neumann algebra \(M\), or with the algebra \(S(M)\) of all measurable operators, or with the algebra \(S(M,\tau)\) of all \(\tau\)-measurable operators affiliated with \(M\), where \(\tau\) is a faithful normal semi-finite trace on \(M\).
