The aim of this paper is to develop a general method, based on potential theory, for studying cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance. Using layer potential techniques, the authors deduce the problem to a singularly perturbed system of integral equations. The system is non-self-adjoint. By a symmetrization technique the solution is expressed in terms of the eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator. The symmetrization is based on a generalization of a Calderón identity to the system of integral equations under consideration and a general theorem of symmetrization of non-self-adjoint operators obtained recently by Khavinson.
