The authors examine orthogonal connections having arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds. They then compute the spectral action for the induced Dirac operators, twisted Dirac operators, and Dirac operators of Chamseddine-Connes type. They consider the Einstein-Hilbert action and the bosonic part of the standard model Lagrangian to obtain the Holst term from loop quantum gravity, to obtain a coupling of the Holst term to the scalar curvature. This leads them to predict a value of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. The contents include: Introduction (containing an overview of the literature); Heat coefficients for Dirac operators: Connes' spectral action principle and chiral projections; three appendices; references (forty-two items).
