Let \(G\) be a semisimple Lie group, \(X\) a smooth curve of genus \(g\geq 2\). Let \(M_g\) be the moduli space of genus \(g\) curves (the author considers only neighbourhoods of generic curves). Consider the quadratic part of the Hitchin map restricted to the open subscheme \(T^*Bun_X\) of the moduli space of Higgs fields (where \(Bun_X\) denotes the coarse moduli space of regular stable \(G\)-bundles on \(X\)): \[ qh: T^*Bun_X \rightarrow H^0(X, \Omega^{\otimes 2}). \] Then there is a lifting of tangent vectors associated to \(qh\) \[ L_{qh}: T_X M_g \rightarrow T_{(P,\Theta )} T^*Bun_X, \text{\quad} f \mapsto H_{qh^*f}|_{(P,\Theta )}, \] where \(f\in T_X M_g\simeq H^1(X, TX)\) is viewed as a linear function on \(H^0(X, \Omega^{\otimes 2})\) by Serre duality, and \(H_{qh^*f}|_{(P,\Theta )}\) is the Hamiltonian vector field of \(qh^*f\) with respect to the standard symplectic structure on \(T^*Bun_X\). On the other hand, there is another way to define a lifting \[ L_0: T_X M_g \rightarrow T_{(P,\Theta )} T^*Bun_X \] as a limit of liftings \(L_{\lambda}: T_X M_g \rightarrow T_{v} (\lambda Conn)\), where \(\lambda Conn \rightarrow M_g\) is the relative moduli space of \(\lambda\)-connections (for any \(X\in M_g\) and \(\lambda =0\) the fiber \(0 Conn_X\) can be naturally identified with \(T^*Bun_X\)). The liftings \(L_{\lambda}\) are induced by the fixed lifting \(L: T_X M_g \rightarrow T_{v} ( Conn)\) via some natural \(C^*\)-action on the spaces \(\lambda Conn\) (here one uses also a nonabelian analogue of Hodge filtration on the space \(Conn\) defined by Simpson; for any \(X\in M_g\) the fiber space \(Conn_X\) can be identified either with the moduli space of principal \(G\)-bundles over \(X\) equipped with a flat connection or with the first Čech cohomology \(H^1(X,G)\)). The lifting \(L\) is defined by a nonabelian analogue of the Gauss-Manin connection defined in the same work of \textit{C. Simpson} [Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 62(pt.2), 217--281 (1997; Zbl 0914.14003)] (in other words it is the connection of isomonodromic deformation). Besides, the lifting \(L_0\) gives a map \(gr (Conn)\rightarrow gr (Conn)\otimes \Omega_{M_g}^1\), which is called in the paper as the associated map of the nonabelian Gauss-Manin connection. The main result of the paper under review is the equality \(L_0=L_{qh}/2\). Closely related results (among other things) have been obtained in the work [\textit{D. Ben-Zvi} and \textit{E. Frenkel}, London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series 308, 46--97 (2004; Zbl 1170.17303)], where the authors heavily used the vertex algebra machinery. The result and proof of the paper under review are more elementary, avoiding the need for this technique. The result of the paper under review is also related to the well known connections between solutions of the isomonodromy equations on algebraic curves and solutions of the Hitchin systems, see [\textit{I. M. Krichever}, Mosc. Math. J. 2, No. 4, 717--752 (2002; Zbl 1044.70010)].
