Essentially the authors prove, assuming that there is a supercompact cardinal and using pcf theory to bound the ultrafilter number, that it is consistent that there exists a singular cardinal \(\lambda\) which has its successor \(\lambda^{+}\) as its ultrafilter number, and nevertheless has an arbitrarily large value for \(2^{\lambda}\).
