The paper represents an important step in the direction of the proof of asymptotic completeness in Quantum Field Theory models, which is a very relevant, still open, problem. The authors consider massive quantum field theories (satisfying Haag-Kastler axioms) and, within such a context, the two-particle scattering. The first basic result is proof of the existence of asymptotic observables as strong limits of their approximating sequences on all physical states from the spectral subspace of a small neighborhood \(\Delta\) of the sum of the two particle (non-overlapping) four momenta. In order to obtain the existence of asymptotic observables, the technical strategy is to exploit locality, obtain a large velocity estimate and a phase-space propagation estimate. Then, the authors prove a weak variant of asymptotic completeness, namely that the linear span of the range of all such asymptotic observables coincides with the subspace of the two particle Haag-Ruelle scattering states with total energy-momentum \(\Delta\). The result applies to concrete quantum field theory models like the self interacting scalar field in two space-time dimensions.
