The authors study the following problem: given two complex polynomials \(P\) and \(Q\), does the algebraic plane curve \(P(x) - Q(y) = 0\) have an irreducible component of genus 0 or 1? They give several sufficient conditions which imply that the answer is no. Moreover, in the case when \(\deg(P) = \deg(Q)\), if both \(P\) and \(Q\) satisfy some hypothesis introduced by \textit{H. Fujimoto} [Am. J. Math. 122, No. 6, 1175--1203 (2000; Zbl 0983.30013)], they show that their sufficient conditions are also necessary.
