From the introduction: The paper reflects the author's contribution to the theory of constructive rational approximation of analytic functions. It includes results published by the author in 1969--1997 (some of them jointly with his students). The results presented concern the convergence of Padé approximants and more general rational interpolation processes (which significantly expand the scope of the classical theory of continued fractions), inverse problems of Padé approximation theory, applications of multipoint Padé approximants (solutions of the Cauchy-Jacobi interpolation problem) to the question of the rate of Chebyshev rational approximation of analytic functions, and asymptotic properties of Hermite-Padé approximants for systems of Markov-type functions. The developed methods and obtained results have made it possible, in particular, to solve a number of problems in this direction, which have been open and extensively discussed in the literature for a long time, at least starting in the 1950--1960s.
