A 3-net in a projective plane consists of three pairwise disjoint classes of lines such that every point incident with two lines from distinct classes is incident with exactly one line from each of the three classes. If the sizes of the sets is \(n\) then the net is said to be of order \(n\). The authors give a complete classification of 3-nets realizing a finite group in projective planes defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. Specifically, they show that the infinite family due to \textit{S. Yuzvinsky} [Compos. Math. 140, No. 6, 1614--1624 (2004; Zbl 1066.52027)], which arises from plane cubics comprising 3-nets realizing cyclic and direct product of two cyclic groups, and the infinite family due to \textit{J. V. Pereira} and \textit{S. Yuzvinsky} [Adv. Math. 219, No. 2, 672--688 (2008; Zbl 1146.14005)], comprising 3-nets realizing dihedral groups, are the only infinite families of 3-nets realizing finite groups. The remaining examples are \textit{G. Urzúa}'s 3-nets [Adv. Geom. 10, No. 2, 287--310 (2010; Zbl 1191.14066)] realizing the quaternion group of order 8. When \(p\) is larger than the order of the group, the above classification holds for characteristic \(p\) with possible exceptions \(\mathrm{Alt}_4\), \(\mathrm{Sym}_4\) and \(\mathrm{Alt}_5\).
