A poset \(\Gamma\) with unique minimal element \(*\) and strict order is ranked if for every \(b\in\Gamma\) maximal chains in \([*,b]\) have the same length. Let \(R_\Gamma\) be the algebra generated by elements \(r_x\), \(x\in\Gamma\setminus\{*\}\) with defining relations \(r_xr_y=0\) if \(x\) does not cover \(y\) and \(r_xs_x=0\) where \(s_x\) is the sum of all \(r_y\) such that \(x\) covers \(y\). Let \(\Gamma\) is a uniform ranked poset with Koszul \(R_\Gamma\). Suppose that \(Y\) is the total space of the order complex of \(\Gamma\setminus\{*\}\). Then \(H_n(Y)=H_{R_\Gamma}(n,0)\) for all \(n\). Let \(\Gamma\) be finite and has a greatest element then \(\Gamma\) is uniform and \(R_\Gamma\) is Koszul if and only if it is Cohen-Macaulay. There exist uniform ranked posets \(\Gamma\), including posets with greatest element, for which the algebra \(R_\Gamma\) is not Koszul but for the Hilbert series we have \(H(R,t)H(R^!,t) =1\).
