As is known, the classic Walsh functions form an orthonormal basis for \(L^2[0,\,1]\). In this paper, the authors consider a new generalized Walsh system which depends on a certain \(N\times N\) unitary matrix and an iterated function system. The convergence of the generalized Walsh series for \(f\in L^p[0,\,1]\) \((1\leq p \leq \infty)\) is discussed. Similar to the classic Walsh functions, the generalized Walsh expansions can be interpreted as conditional expectations and martingales. Finally, the generalized Walsh systems are applied in signal encoding and encryption, where the signals are piecewise constant on \(N\)-adic subintervals of \([0,\,1]\). Numerical examples are also given.
