Given a metric continuum \(X\), let \(C(X)\) be the hyperspace of subcontinua of \(X\), with the Hausdorff metric. For each proper subcontinuum \(A\) of \(X\), the author considers the boundary \(Bd(C(A))\) of \(C(A)\) in \(C(X)\). This paper continues the line of research which studies properties of continua and/or their hyperspaces by considering some particular subsets of hyperspaces. Two particular examples of this line of work are the papers by the reviewer [\textit{A. Illanes}, Topol Proc. 16, 63-87 (1991; Zbl 0790.54007] and the author [Topology Appl. 167, 10-25 (2014; Zbl 1295.54014)]. In the second mentioned paper, the author used sets of the form \(Bd(C(A))\) to study hyperspaces, in particular, she showed that for each proper subcontinuum of \(X\), \(Bd(C(A))\) is a subcontinuum of \(C(X)\). Among other results, in the paper under review, the author proves that: (a) if \(Bd(A)\) is connected and \(Bd(C(A))\) is a \(2\)-cell for every proper nondegenerate subcontinuum \(A\) of \(X\), then \(X\) is indecomposable and has only arcs as nondegenerate proper subcontinua, and (b) if \(X\) is arcwise connected, then the function from \(C(X)-{X}\) into \(C(C(X))\) that sends \(A\) to \(Bd(C(A))\) is continuous if and only if \(X\) is a simple closed curve. The author asks (Problem 3.6) if the condition that \(Bd(A)\) is connected for all \(A\) can be removed in (a).
