The authors give an area estimate for the compact, embedded, minimal surfaces in the 3-sphere that were described by \textit{H. B. Lawson jun.} [Ann. Math. (2) 92, 335--374 (1970; Zbl 0205.52001)]. Their method is to construct the high-genus Lawson surfaces via a Weierstrass-type representation called the DPW method. In Section 1, they recall the theory of loop groups, which are a key part of the DPW method. They also recall some general facts about Lawson surfaces and they give the Weierstrass data for saddle towers, which are the blow-up limits of Lawson surfaces when their genus goes to infinity. In Section 2, they use the implicit function theorem to find the DPW data that induce Lawson surfaces of high genus. The time parameter starts from zero and denotes the inverse of the genus. The equation to solve is the period problem on the induced surfaces. In Section 3, they compute the time derivatives of the DPW data that were constructed in Section 2. In Section 4, they compute the area of minimal surfaces in terms of their DPW data, thus obtaining the asymptotic expansion for the area of Lawson surfaces near infinite genus.
