    Let \(H(\mathbb D)\) and \(H^\infty(\mathbb D)\) respectively denote the spaces of analytic functions and bounded analytic functions on the unit disc \(\mathbb D\). For \(K: [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\) a right-continuous nondecreasing function, the space \(\mathcal Q_K\) is defined as the set of all analytic functions \(f\) on \(\mathbb D\) for which \[ \|f\|_{\mathcal Q_K}^2 = \sup_{a\in\mathbb D} \int_{\mathbb D} |f^\prime(z)|^2 K\left(1-|\varphi_a(z)|^2\right) dA(z)<\infty. \] The spaces \(\mathcal Q_K\) are Möbius invariant, i.e., \(\|f\circ\varphi_a\|_{\mathcal Q_K} = \|f\|_{\mathcal Q_K}\) for every Möbius transformation \(\varphi_a\). For \(K(t) = t^p\), the spaces \(\mathcal Q_K\) are denoted by \(\mathcal Q_p\). Note that \(\mathcal Q_0\) is the Dirichlet space, \(\mathcal Q_1 = \mathrm{BMOA}\), and \(\mathcal Q_p\) is the Bloch space \(\mathcal B\) for \(p>1\). For a given \(K\), set \(\varphi_K(s)= \sup_{0\leq t\leq 1} K(st)/K(t),\, 0<s<\infty\), and consider the following two conditions for \(\varphi_K\): \[ \int_0^1 \frac{\varphi_K(s)}{s} ds< \infty,\tag{1} \] and \[ \int_1^\infty \frac{\varphi_K(s)}{s^2} ds <\infty.\tag{2} \] The following concept was introduced by \textit{K. M. Dyakonov} in [J. Funct. Anal. 240, No. 2, 429--444 (2006; Zbl 1116.46018)]: Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be two spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc \(\mathbb D\) with \(X\subset Y\). For an inner function \(\theta\), if every \(f\in X\) satisfying \(f\theta\in Y\) must actually satisfy \(f\theta\in X\), then \(\theta\) is said to be \((X,Y)\)-improving. In the paper the authors prove the following. Theorem. Suppose (1) and (2) hold for \(K\) and \(\theta\) is an inner function. Then the following are equivalent: (a) \(\theta\in\mathcal Q_K\) (b) \(\theta\) is \((\mathcal Q_K, \mathrm{BMOA})\)-improving (c) \(\theta\) is \((\mathcal Q_K,\mathcal B)\)-improving For the spaces \(\mathcal Q_p\) this result was originally proved by \textit{J. Á. Peláez} [J. Funct. Anal. 255, No. 6, 1403--1418 (2008; Zbl 1160.30027)]. In the paper the authors also characterize the zero sets of \(\mathcal Q_K\) in terms of Carleson-Newman sequences.
