The author considers the equations which govern the motion of incompressible, viscous second grade fluids in a bounded 2D-domain. At the boundary slip boundary conditions (in the sense of Navier) are set. The main objective of the paper consists in the derivation of a priori estimates for the solution \(u_{\alpha}\) to the given initial boundary value problem which are independent of the viscoelastic parameter \(\alpha\). After this is done the author establishes the convergence of \((u_{\alpha})_{\alpha}\) for \(\alpha \to 0\) toward the solution \(u_{NS}\) of an associated (pure) Navier-Stokes system. Finally, corresponding convergence rates in terms of \(\alpha\) are determined. More precisely, the value \(\gamma > 0\) is calculated so that the error \(\| u_{\alpha} - u_{NS} \|\) is of the same order as \(O({\alpha}^{\gamma})\). The article is very comprehensive and self-contained. The bibliography contains 25 items including 3 monographs or books.
