The paper is focused on an extended continuum model which describes the output of a factory as a function of the work in progress and the position of the control parameter for priority allocation, called the push-pull point (PPP). This problem is based on clearing functions for integrating the impact of the dispatch policies and for allowing changes in the PPP policies. The authors analyze the qualitative behavior of the model, discuss its numerical discretization, and investigate the control action and the optimization for optimal PPP dispatch and release policies.
