For a Tychonoff space \(X\) let \(F(X)\) [\(A(X)\)] be the free [abelian] topological group on \(X\) and \(F_n(X)\) the subspace of \(F(X)\) consisting of all reduced words of length at most \(n\). If \(F(X)\) or \(A(X)\) is a q-space then \(X\) is discrete while if \(F_4(X)\) is a q-space then \(X\) is either anticompact (= a cf space) or pseudocompact. When \(X\) is a \(\mu\)-space the following are equivalent: \(F_4(X)\) is an r-space; \(F_4(X)\) (equivalently \(F_n(X)\) for all \(n\in\mathbb N\)) is of pointwise countable type; \(F_4(X)\) (equivalently \(F_n(X)\) for all \(n\in\mathbb N\)) is locally compact; \(X\) is either compact or discrete. If \(X\) is the topological sum of an \(\omega\)-bounded space and a discrete space then \(F_2(X)\) is locally \(\omega\)-bounded.
