    This paper deals with the behaviour for \(t>0\) small of \(C^{2,1}\) nonnegative solutions \(u(x,t)\), \(v(x,t)\) of the following system of differential inequalities: \[ \begin{aligned} 0 &\leq u_t-\Delta u\leq v^\lambda,\\ 0 &\leq v_t-\Delta v\leq u^\sigma,\end{aligned}\qquad\text{in }\Omega\times (0,1),\;\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n, \] \(\lambda\geq 0\), \(\sigma\geq 0\) being constants. Optimal conditions on \(\lambda\), \(\sigma\) are found such that \(u\), \(v\) satisfy pointwise bounds in \(K\Subset\Omega\) as \(t\to 0^+\). To be more precise we shall formulate only one result, namely Theorem 2.2. Assume that \(\lambda>{n+2\over n}\), \(\sigma<{2\over n}+{n+2\over n\lambda}\). Then for each compact \(K\subset \Omega\), \[ \max_K\,u= o(t^{-{n^2\over 2(n+2)}})\quad\text{as }t\to 0^+,\tag{1} \] \[ \max_K\,v= O(t^{-{n\over 2}})\quad\text{as }t\to 0^+.\tag{2} \] The bounds (1), (2) are optimal. In proving their theorems the authors find new pointwise bounds for nonlinear heat potentials, which are the parabolic analog of the nonlinear Riesz potentials.
