The author groups some different problems such as diffusion-convection, nonhomogeneous heat and wave equation in a single model \[ \frac{\partial^\sigma u}{\partial t^{\sigma}}+ (\sigma-1)A(x)\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}= u_{xx}+ (\sigma- 2)B(x)u_{x} + C(x)u(x)+f(x,t,u),\,\, a<x<b,\, t>0, \] using the parameter \(\sigma = 1,2\) and different coefficients \(A,B,C.\) The time-dependent initial and boundary value problem for this equation is solved applying the method of Galerkin by a system of test functions of the form \[ S(k,h)(x)=\operatorname{sinc} \left(\frac{x-kh}{h}\right),\quad k=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\dots,\quad \operatorname{sinc}(x)=\frac{\sin(\pi x)}{\pi x}, \] named sinc functions. Four numerical examples are given to illustrate the behavior of the maximum absolute error at the grid points for different time values. The graphics of the approximate and the exact solutions do not differ.
