Let \(E\) be a Banach space and \(E^*\) be its dual space. \(E\) is said to have the weak fpp for left reversible semigroups (respectively, \(E^*\) is said to have the weak\(^*\) fpp for left reversible semigroups) if for any non-empty weakly compact (respectively, weak\(^*\) compact) convex subset \(K\) of \(E\) (respectively, \(E^*\)), any separately continuous non-expansive action of a left reversible semitopological semigroup on \(K\) has a common fixed point. If this property is only true for the semigroup \(\mathbb{N}\) instead of all left reversible semitopological semigroups, then \(E\) is said to have the weak fixed point property (respectively, \(E^*\) is said to have the weak\(^*\) fixed point property). Let \(G\) be a second countable locally compact group and \(C^*_r(G)\) be its reduced group \(C^*\)-algebra. The essential part of the first main result of this article is the equivalence of the following statements: {\parindent=0.7cm \begin{itemize}\item[1.] \(G\) is compact. \item[2.] \(C^*_r(G)^*\) has the weak\(^*\) fpp for left reversible semigroups. \item[3.] \(C^*_r(G)^*\) has the weak\(^*\) fixed point property. \item[4.] The spectrum of \(C^*_r(G)\) is discrete. \end{itemize}} As a corollary, the author gives a positive answer to a question raised in [\textit{G. Fendler} et al., J. Funct. Anal. 264, No. 1, 288--302 (2013; Zbl 1260.43007)] concerning the asymptotic center property of \(C^*_r(G)^*\). On the other hand, the author gives a negative answer to a question in [\textit{N. Randrianantoanina}, J. Funct. Anal. 258, No. 11, 3801--3817 (2010; Zbl 1207.47061)], by showing that the dual space of the \(C^*\)-algebra of all continuous functions on the one-point compactification of \(\mathbb{N}\) does not have the weak\(^*\) fpp for left reversible semigroups. Furthermore, the author shows that, if the predual of a \(W^*\)-algebra has the weak fixed point property, then it has the weak fpp for left reversible semigroups, which improves a result of \textit{R. E. Bruck jun.} [Pac. J. Math. 53, 59--71 (1974; Zbl 0312.47045)], but only in the special case of preduals of \(W^*\)-algebras.
