Let \(G\) denote a connected reductive algebraic group over a non-archimedean local field \(F\) of residue characteristic \(p\). In the paper under review, the authors study the behaviour of extensions and deformations under the first step of the classification of irreducible smooth representations of \(G\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\) given in [\textit{N. Abe} et al., J. Am. Math. Soc. 30, No. 2, 495--559 (2017; Zbl 1372.22014)]. Let \(R\) denote a commutative ring. For a parabolic subgroup \(P = LU\) of \(G\) and a parabolic subgroup \(Q\) of \(G\) containing \(P\), the authors study the functor taking a smooth \(R\)-representation \(\sigma\) of \(L\) which extends to a representation \(e_G(\sigma)\) of \(G\) to the smooth \(R\)-representation \(e_G(\sigma) \otimes St^G_Q(R)\) of \(G\), where \(St^G_Q(R)\) denotes the generalized Steinberg representation.
