The authors of the paper under review redefine the Kasparov's $KK$-groups in terms of the asymptotically commuting families. Such a revision is an extension of the results of \textit{G. Yu} [K-Theory 11, No. 4, 307--318 (1997; Zbl 0888.46047)] and \textit{Y. Qiao} and \textit{J. Roe} [Forum Math. 22, No. 4, 657--665 (2010; Zbl 1204.19005)] from commutative to general separable $C^*$-algebras, and from $K$-homology to $KK$-theory. This new theory admits a simplification of the dimension shift of the Kasparov's $KK$-theory. Moreover, unlike in the case of E-theory, there is no suspension in this case. These new features make the theory useful for applications.
