A fully parabolic chemotaxis system with signal dependent sensitivity is studied in bounded smooth domains of ${\mathbb R}^N$, $N\ge 2$. Using new weighted energy estimates (and subtle properties of Bessel functions) global-in-time existence of solutions is proved in a parameter range larger than that in the paper [\textit{M. Mizukami} and \textit{T. Yokota}, Math. Nachr. 290, No. 16, 2648--2660 (2017; Zbl 1379.35162)]. In some cases, the spatially homogeneous steady state is shown to be the global attractor of the system.
