The author considers a class of matrices called \textit{Hermitizable}. It consists of those finite or infinite matrices $A = (a_{i j})_{i, j \in E}$ indexed by a finite or countable set $E$ such that there exist positive $\mu_i, i \in E$, such that \[ \mu_i a_{i j} = \mu_j \overline{a_{j i}}, \quad i, j \in E \] holds. In other words, these matrices are self-adjoint in the $L^2$-space on $E$ with respect to the measure induced by the $\mu_i$ and, hence, their spectra are real. Properties of such matrices as, e.g., conditions for isospectrality, are studied. Particular focus is put on tridiagonal matrices, including algorithms for computing the maximal eigenpair of such a matrix.
