    A commutative (not necessary associative) algebra \(A\) over a field \(F\) with characteristic not two is called a Lotka-Volterra algebra if it admits a so-called natural basis \(\mathcal{B} = \{e_1,\dots, e_n\}\), such that \(e_i e_j = \alpha_{ij} e_i + \alpha_{ji} e_j\) with \(\alpha_{ij}\in F\) satisfying \(a_{ii} = 1/2\), and \(\alpha_{ij} + \alpha_{ji} = 1\) for all \(i , j = 1, 2, \dots , n\). The paper is devoted to studying the structure of Lotka-Volterra algebras and its corresponding derivation algebras. As a consequence, the authors show that a previous conjecture by \textit{R. Ganikhodzhaev} et al. [Commun. Algebra 46, No. 3, 1353--1366 (2018; Zbl 1417.17036)] is false.
