The authors investigate a model for thermoelastic diffusion solids with fractional order strain within the theory of extended thermodynamics. The model involves coupling of strain, temperature and concentration fields. It provides, through the fractional derivative approach, more flexibility and an extension in the domain of applicability in dealing with various applications involving ultrafast heating phenomena, as compared to classical models of thermoelastic diffusion. The Caputo definition of time-fractional derivative is adopted and the strain is taken to include a relaxational part that depends on this fractional derivative. The free energy function is assumed as a concrete quadratic form in its arguments, Clausius-Duhem inequality is written down and the constitutive and kinetic equations are derived in the usual way. The authors formulate the basic generalized governing equations of motion, energy and concentration. These equations are then discussed to show their superiority, as compared to classical models, in representing the different phenomena taking place in continuous media with complex structure under consideration. For numerical evaluation, the authors consider a one-dimensional initial-boundary-value problem of a sandwich plate made of three layers. The two external layers are of the same material and width, while the middle one is of a different material and double width. Initially, the structure is at rest, the external bounding surfaces are traction free and subjected to symmetrical transient heat and chemical potential shock loads. Ideal interfacial conditions are assumed. Laplace transform technique is used for the solution. Numerical results are presented for the distributions of temperature, chemical potential, mechanical displacement, stress and concentration for different material, geometrical and fractional order parameters. Borrowing the authors' own words, the present investigation is expected to ``provide a comprehensive understanding on thermoelastic diffusive coupling and optimal design of sandwich structures under extreme fast heating condition''.
