The paper under review deals with the mathematical analysis of transmission properties of electromagnetic meta-materials, consisting of periodic microstructures of a composite material with two components. More precisely, the authors study meta-materials consisting of air and a metal microstructure \(\Sigma_\eta\), which is assumed to be an \(\eta\)-periodic repetition of scaled copies of some geometry \(\Sigma\). The authors consider four geometries: \(\Sigma\) can be two rotations of a metal cylinder, a metal plate, or the complement of an air cylinder. They use homogenization theory and multiscale methods to extract macroscopic features and the behaviour of the solution. More precisely, using the effective equations, they calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients for four microscopic geometries \(\Sigma\). For the geometries that are invariant in the \(e_3\)-direction, they study the limit behaviour of the electromagnetic fields for high-contrast media. Finally, several numerical experiments confirming the analytical results complete the paper.
