For a metric space \((X,d)\) the space of real-valued Lipschitz functions \(\mathrm{Lip}(X)\) is a vector lattice but not necessarily closed under pointwise products. One the other hand the space of locally Lipschitz functions, denoted by \(LL(X)\) by the authors, is closed under pointwise products. It also has the property that it is ``closed under reciprocation'', i.e. if \(f\in LL(X)\) is a function that vanishes nowhere, also the function \(\frac{1}{f}\) is locally Lipschitz. For \(\mathrm{Lip}(X)\) both of these properties can be characterised by conditions on \(X\). More precisely, \(\mathrm{Lip}(X)\) is closed under pointwise products if and only if \(X\) is bounded and closed under reciprocation if and only if \(X\) is compact. The authors consider a number of classes of real-valued functions and exhibit properties on the underlying metric spaces under which these classes are closed under pointwise products or under reciprocation. These classes include the class of Cauchy-Lipschitz functions, the uniformly locally Lipschitz functions and the functions which are Lipschitz in the small. The article also contains a number of extension results for Cauchy-Lipschitz functions and Lipschitz in the small functions. As an application of these extension results, a characterisation of the uniformly continuous functions which can be uniformly approximated by Lipschitz functions is given.
