Let \(\mathcal{X}\subset\mathbb{P}^n(\overline{\mathbb{F}_q})\) be a non-degenerate projective algebraic curve defined over the finite field \(\mathbb{F}_q,\ q=p^h,\) where \(\overline{\mathbb{F}_q}\) is the algebraic closure of \(\mathbb{F}_q\). Let \(\mathcal X'\) be its strict dual curve and \(\gamma : \mathcal X \to \mathcal X'\) be the (strict) Gauss map of \(\mathcal X\). The author studies the separable degree of \(\gamma\) and gives in particular a generalization of a result [\textit{A. Hefez} and \textit{J. F. Voloch}, Arch. Math. 54, No. 3, 263--273 (1990; Zbl 0662.14016)] on the separable degree of the Gauss map of plane Frobenius nonclassical curves. It is also shown that if \(\overline{\mathbb{F}_q}(\mathcal X')\) is a subfield of a Galois subcover of \(\overline{\mathbb{F}_q}(\mathcal X)\) by a linear automorphism group, then \(\mathcal X'\) is degenerate,
