Let \(X, Y\) be (real) Banach spaces. The pair \((X, Y)\) satisfies the \textit{weak maximizing property} (WMP, for short) if, for any bounded linear operator \(T: X rightarrow Y\), the existence of a non-weakly null maximizing sequence for \(T\) implies that \(T\) attains its norm (a \textit{maximizing sequence} for \(T\) is a sequence \((x_n)_n \subseteq X\) with \(\|x_n\| = 1\) for every \(n \in \mathbb{N}\) such that \(\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \|Tx_n\| = \|T\|\)). This property was recently studied in [\textit{R.~M. Aron} et al., Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 148, No.~2, 741--750 (2020; Zbl 1442.46007)], motivated by [\textit{D.~Pellegrino} and \textit{E.~V. Teixeira}, Bull. Braz. Math. Soc. (N.S.) 40, No.~3, 417--431 (2009; Zbl 1205.47012), Theorem~1] which asserts that the pair \((\ell_p, \ell_q)\) has the WMP for every \(1 < p < \infty\) and \(1 \leq q < \infty\). In the present paper, the authors provide a new interesting approach to deal with this property (and its variants (see Definition~1.1)) by making use of the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity and the modulus of asymptotic smoothness (see Theorem~3.1, Theorem~3.7, and their consequences throughout Section~3). In fact, they cover all the positive known examples from [\textit{R.~M. Aron} et al., loc.\,cit.]\ and present a large amount of new pairs of Banach spaces satisfying this property. Indeed, they deal with Schur spaces, Dunford-Pettis spaces, James sequence spaces, and Orlicz spaces (see Section~3). Finally (thanks to Theorem 4.2 in Section~4), they conclude the paper by showing that there are renormings \(|\cdot|_p\) and \(|\cdot|_q\) on the Banach spaces \(L_p[0,1]\) and \(L_q[0,1]\), respectively, such that the pair \(((L_p[0,1], |\cdot|_p), (L_q[0,1],|\cdot|_q))\) satisfies the WMP when \(1 <p \leq 2\) and \(2 \leq q < \infty\). This opens the gate for further research on the topic since it seems to be an open question whether the pair \((L_q, L_q)\) satisfies the WMP when one considers the standard \(p\)- and \(q\)-norms on \(L_p\) and \(L_q\), respectively, whenever \(1 <p \leq 2\) and \(2 \leq q < \infty\) (for the other values of \(p\) and \(q\), we invite the reader to refer to the recent paper [\textit{S.~Dantas} et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl. 504, No.~2, Article ID 125433, 14~p. (2021; Zbl 1472.46005), Theorem~3.2]).
