Let \(q\) be a symmetric two-tensor. Then the \(q\)-flow is defined by \[ \partial_{t}g=q,g\left( 0\right) =h, \] where \(g\left( t\right) \) is a one parameter family of smooth metrics. A normalized soliton of the \(q\)-flow is a metric \(g\) satisfying the equation \[ \frac{1}{2}\mathcal{L}_{X}g=cg+\frac{1}{2}q, \] where \(\mathcal{L}_{X}g\) is the Lie derivative of \(g\) in the direction of the vector field \(X\). These solitons are called expanding when \(c<0\), steady when \(c=0\) and shrinking when \(c>0\). The gradient soliton is obtained when \(X=\nabla f\). The gradient \(q\)-soliton satisfies the equation \[ \operatorname*{Hess}f=cg+\frac{1}{2}g. \] The main theorem (Theorem 1.1) states that if \(q\) is divergence-free and trace-free, then every compact \(q\)-soliton is \(q\)-flat. The author applies Theorem 1.1 to the cases when \(q\) is the Bach tensor, \(B\) (in the \(4\)-dimensional case) and \(q\) is the ambient obstruction tensor, \(\mathcal{O}\) for even \(n\geq4\). For Bach solitons, Theorem 1.1 implies Theorem 3.2 by \textit{P. T. Ho} in [J. Geom. Phys. 133, 1--9 (2018; Zbl 1398.53074)]. For ambient obstruction solitons, the author derives from Theorem 1.1 that any compact ambient obstruction soliton with constant scalar curvature is \(\mathcal{O}\)-flat; in particular, all compact homogeneous ambient obstruction solitons are \(\mathcal{O}\)-flat (Theorem 1.2). The author also presents the following generalization of Theorem 1.1 by \textit{P. Petersen} and \textit{W. Wylie} [Pac. J. Math. 241, No. 2, 329--345 (2009; Zbl 1176.53048)]: every compact gradient ambient obstruction soliton with non-positive Ricci curvature must be stationary, i.e., the potential function is constant (Theorem 1.3). Author's theorem 1.4 provides the following classification in the steady and shrinking cases for Bach solitons: every homogeneous steady gradient Bach soliton is Bach flat and the only non-Bach-flat shrinking solitons are product metrics on \(\mathbb{R}^{2}\times\mathbb{S}^{2}\) and \(\mathbb{R}^{2}\times H^{2}\) (Theorem 1.4).
