This paper is concerned with the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation with an exponential restoring force: \[ u_{xx}^{}(x,y,n)+u_{yy}^{}(x,y,n)= e^{u(x,y,n-1)-u(x,y,n)}-e^{u(x,y,n)-u(x,y,n+1)}. \tag{1} \] The author proposes a method of generate solutions of (1) with the Ansatz \[ e^{-u(x,y,n)+u(x,y,n-1)}=\Bigl[1+\frac{p^2}{4}\ \text{sech}^2\Bigl(\frac{p\;\!\phi+\tilde{\omega}\;\!n}{2}\Bigr)\Bigr]\, \frac{e^{c_1^{}\phi +c_2^{}}}{|\nabla\phi|^2} \tag{2}\] in terms of previously known solutions \(\phi(x, y)\) of the two-dimensional Laplace's equation \(\phi_{xx}^{}+\phi_{yy}^{}=0,\) where \(c_1^{}\) and \(c_2^{}\) are constants, \(\sinh\frac{\tilde{\omega}}{2}=\pm \frac{p}{2}\,.\) In this way the solution found in [\textit{A. Nakamura}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 52, 380--387 (1983; \url{doi:10.1143/JPSJ.52.380})] is recovered. More precisely, this solitonic solution can be obtained under a particular choice of \(\phi.\) Other solutions can then be constructed from (2) by imposing special boundary conditions.
