Let \(S\) be a smooth projective surface defined over the field of complex numbers and let \(L\) be a very ample line bundle on \(X\). By identifying \(S\) with its image in \(\mathbb{P}^{N}\) via the embedding associated with \(L\), we can consider the dual variety \(D(S)\) of \(S\). If \((S,L)\not\cong (\mathbb{P}^{2},\mathcal{O}(1))\), then \(D(S)\) is a hypersurface in the dual projective space \((\mathbb{P}^{N})^{\vee}\). Then its degree \(m\) is usually called the \textit{class} of \(S\). More generally, for a projective manifold \(X\subset \mathbb{P}^{N}\), one can consider its \textit{second class} \(m_{2}\), that is, the class of its general surface section. On the other hand, since \(m_{2}=c_{2}(J_{1}(L))\) holds for \((S,L)\), one can study \(m_{2}\) in the wider setting of ample line bundles. The aim of this paper is to study second class in the framework of ample vector bundles. The authors conducted research under the following basic setting: \(X\) is a smooth complex projective variety of dimension \(n\), \(\mathcal{E}\) is an ample vector bundle of rank \(r\) on \(X\) with \(2\leq r\leq n-2\) and \(H\) is an ample line bundle on \(X\). Furthermore the ample vector bundle of rank \(n-2\) on \(X\) given by \(\mathcal{F}:=\mathcal{E}\oplus H^{\oplus (n-r-2)}\) has a section vanishing on a smooth surface \(S\subset X\). Then the authors defined \[ m_{2}:=[c_{2}(\Omega_{X}\oplus \mbox{det}\mathcal{F})+c_{1}(\mathcal{F})^{2}-c_{2}(\mathcal{F})+H^{2}]\cdot c_{n-2}(\mathcal{F})+4(g-1), \] where \(g=1+\frac{1}{2}(K_{X}+c_{1}(\mathcal{F})+H)\cdot H\cdot c_{n-2}(\mathcal{F})\). If \(\mathcal{F}\) admits a section vanishing on a smooth surface \(S\), then we can prove that \(m_{2}=c_{2}(J_{1}(H_{S}))\). So several classification results for surfaces of small class can be extended in the setting of ample vector bundles. In this paper, the authors studied \(m_{2}\) and \(\delta:=m_{2}-d\), and as main results of this paper they gave several classifications of \((X,\mathcal{E},H)\) with respect to \(m_{2}\) and \(\delta\).
