In this paper, the authors determine the smallest possible asymptotic order of the extremal \(L^p\) discrepancy for infinite sequences. More precisely, they show that the extremal \(L^p\) discrepancy of any \(N\)-point set in the \(d\)-dimensional unit cube is of order at least \((\log N)^{d/2}\), which matches with the known upper bounds. The result complements related results which have been obtained for the \(L^p\) star discrepancy (instead of extremal \(L^p\) discrepancy), resp.\ for the case of finite point sets (rather than infinite sequences). Compare in particular \textit{W. W. L. Chen} [Mathematika 27, 153--170 (1980; Zbl 0456.10027)], \textit{P. D. Projnov} [C. R. Acad. Bulg. Sci. 39, No. 9, 31--34 (1986; Zbl 0616.10042)], and the classical papers of \textit{K. F. Roth} [Mathematika 1, 73--79 (1954; Zbl 0057.28604)] and \textit{W. M.
