Using the notion of rank of a connection we distinguish a class of projectively flat affine connections of rank 1 and describe nondegenerate surfaces on which the Blaschke connection belongs to this class. In contrast with locally symmetric connections not every projectively flat affine connection on a 2-dimensional manifold can be realized on a surface in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\). A criterion of the realizability is given.
