This paper is concerned with the study of approximation order of finitely generated shift-invariant (FSI) subspaces \( S(\Phi) \subset L_2({\mathbb{R}}^d)\). Here, \(S(\Phi)\), generated by a finite subset \(\Phi\) of \(L_2({\mathbb{R}}^d)\), is the smallest closed subspace of \(L_2({\mathbb{R}}^d)\) that contains the set \[ \{ \varphi(\cdot - \alpha): \varphi \in \Phi, \;\alpha \in {\mathbb{Z}}^d \}. \] Assume that the generators \(\varphi \in \Phi\) satisfy a mild technical condition (which is e.g. satisfied if the generators are \(O(|\cdot|^{-\rho})\) at infinity with \(\rho >k+d\)) and a linear independence condition, which is weaker than \(L_2\)-stability. Approximation order \(k\) is then provided by \(S(\Phi)\) if and only if there exists a superfunction \(\psi \in S(\Phi)\) which is a finite linear combination of the translates of \(\varphi \in \Phi\) and satisfies \( D^j \hat{\psi}(\alpha) = \delta_\alpha \delta_j\) for \(|j|< k\) and \(\alpha \in 2\pi {\mathbb{Z}}^d\). This extends earlier results of \textit{R.-Q. Jia} [in: Approximation theory VIII, Vol. 2: Wavelets \textit{(C. K. Chui, L. L. Schumaker,} eds.) Singapore: World Scientific, Ser. Approx. Decompos. 6, 179-208 (1995; Zbl 0927.42021)]. Further, for refinable spaces, necessary and sufficient conditions for the refinement mask symbol of \(\Phi\) are presented which are equivalent with the requirement that \(S(\Phi)\) provides approximation order \(k\). An extended version of this paper can be found in the authors' paper Constructive Approximation 14, No. 4, 631-652 (1998; Zbl 0919.41009).
