The authors investigate the multiplicity of positive solutions of the equation \[ -\operatorname{div}(a(z) |\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u) = \lambda u^{p-1} + \xi(z) u^{r-1} \] in a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega\) under the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here, \(1<p<r<p^*\), the weight \(a\) is Lipschitz up to the boundary and satisfies \(a \geq c > 0\) in \(\overline{\Omega}\), the function \(\xi\) is bounded, \(\xi^+, \xi^- \neq 0\) in \(\Omega\), and \(\int_\Omega \xi \varphi_1^r \,dx < 0\), where \(\varphi_1\) is the first positive eigenfunction of the weighted \(p\)-Laplacian. The authors show the existence of \(\lambda^* \in (\lambda_1, \infty)\), where \(\lambda_1\) is the first eigenvalue of the weighted \(p\)-Laplacian, such that for any \(\lambda \in (\lambda_1, \lambda^*)\) the problem has at least two solutions, for \(\lambda=\lambda_1, \lambda^*\) the problem has at least one solution, and for \(\lambda > \lambda^*\) the problem has no solution.
