An algorithm for computing weight multiplicities in a simple module of an algebraic Chevalley group over a field of positive characteristic p is described. The method based on a theorem of \textit{G. M. Nielsen} [Dissertation, Univ. Wisconsin (1963)] seems to be essentially more efficient than the one introduced by \textit{N. Burgoyne} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 21, 13-17 (1971; Zbl 0256.20010)], especially when p is small. A concrete application is outlined where the group is of type \(G_ 2\) and \(p=5\).
