An algebra with bracket [, ] is called a Malcev algebra if it satisfies the Malcev identities: \([x,x]=0\), \(J(x,y,[x,z])=[J(x,y,z),x]\), where \(J(x,y,z)=[[x,y],z]+[[y,z],x]+[[z,x],y]\). Any Lie algebra is of course a Malcev algebra. The algebra of octonions, with \([a,b]=ab-ba\), is an example of non-Lie Malcev algebras. Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a semisimple compact finite-dimensional Malcev algebra and \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}_ 0\) be the associated (untwisted) Malcev loop algebra. Taking the semidirect sum of \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}_ 0\) and the Virasoro algebra (without center), one has an algebra \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}\) with commutation relations: \[ [T^ a_ m,T^ b_ n]=f_ c^{ab}T^ c_{m+n},\quad [L_ m,T^ a_ m]=-nT^ a_{m+n},\quad [L_ m,L_ n]=(m- n)L_{m+n}, \] where \(1\leq a,b,c\leq \dim {\mathfrak g}\), \(m,n\in {\mathbb{Z}}.\) The author shows that the algebras \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}_ 0\) and \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}\) have unique central extensions which are given by the same cocycles as in the case of Lie algebras.
