Given a ring \(R\), one may define an operation on \(R\) by \(x\circ y=x+y-xy\) for all \(x,y\in R\). Then \(R\) becomes a semigroup with respect to this circle operation. In the paper under review the authors consider the relationship between the structure of the ring \(R\) and that of the adjoint semigroup \((R,\circ)\). Particularly, the authors are interested in the cases where the semigroup is simple, 0-simple, cancellative, regular, inverse, or a union of groups; and conversely they also impose certain similar conditions on the ring and want to have some expected properties of the semigroup. It is an interesting paper on the subject.
