The authors start with questions of analytic continuation of gap series and solutions of the complex heat equation \[ {\partial u \over \partial w} = {\partial^2 u \over \partial z^2} \] arising from the work of S. Kovalevskaya and Fredholm and are led through wide-ranging considerations involving gap series, Dirichlet series, quasianalytic classes and sets of uniqueness. A typical result is the following. There exist complex \(\{c_n\}_0^\infty\) with \[ 0 < \varlimsup |c_n |^{1/n} = \delta < 1 \] such that \[ \sum^\infty_{n = 0} c_n (e^{nz} + e^{ \omega nz} + e^{\omega^2 nz}) \] where \(\omega = \exp (2 \pi i/3)\) extends without singularities to the complex plane. Indeed, the sum of the series can vanish identically. At one point an important role is played by a technique originated by \textit{I. I. Hirschman}, jun. and the reviewer [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 1, 390-393 and 512-517 (1950; Zbl 0038.04502 and 039.08201)].
