A posteriori error estimates are discussed for elliptic problems of order 4 when the regularity assumption \(u\in H^2_0 (\Omega) \cap H^{p+2} (\Omega)\) with \(p \geq 3\) can be postulated. Then the area based residues or the jumps of the third derivatives may be dominant in the error estimator. It depends on whether conforming the finite elements with polynomials of even degree or of odd degree are used in the computation.
