We are interested in the effect of a 2-cocycle \(\alpha\) on the global dimension of a twisted group ring \(k^ \alpha G = k^ \alpha[x^{\pm 1}_ 1,\dots,x^{\pm 1}_ n]\) (\(k\) is a field, \(G\) the free abelian group of rank \(n\)). The global dimension of these algebras is between 1 and \(n = \text{rk }G\). Furthermore, it is not difficult to show that it is at least the number of multiplicative independent monomials of the form \(x_ 1^{t_ 1}\dots x_ n^{t_ n}\) that commute in the algebra. The conjecture is that equality holds i.e. there exists a subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) whose rank equals the global dimension of \(k^ \alpha G\), so that the cocycle \(\alpha\), when restricted to \(H\), becomes trivial. The result is known for global dimension 1 (trivial) and for global dimension \(n\) (\(= \text{rk }G\)). We connect this problem to equivariant projective representations and prove the conjecture for \(\text{gl}\dim k^ \alpha G = n - 1\).
