In this important paper, the axially moving Kirchhoff string is considered. It is represented by a nonlinear partial differential equation. The main result is the following: it is proved that the nonlinear string can be stabilized by a linear boundary control which is the negative feedback of the transversal velocity of the string at one end. Furthermore, it is concluded that the axially moving Kirchhoff string is stable without an active control when one of its ends is free to move transversally.
