Splines are defined as piecewise polynomials in one and, e.g. by tensor-products or similar constructions in two or more variables (dimensions). In this paper, the splines are defined on two-dimensional grids, on each of whose local rectangles, the spline is a bilinear polynomial. For such functions and for differentiable approximands, the author prove optimal (sharp) error estimates using the approximands' moduli of continuity.
