The authors consider a two-dimensional map, called sigma map, similar to the Smale horseshoe map. Its dynamics is very complex and results from the interaction of an attracting periodic orbit and the unstable manifold of a saddle fixed point. As the radius of the periodic orbit increases the attracting dynamics is proven to change from a periodic orbit to a strange chaotic attractor. Generalisations are discussed and numerical examples are given.
