The description of surfaces for computer aided geometric design usually requires a large number of control parameters. The authors present a technique for compressing this number of data; their method is based on wavelet decomposition for box splines, the approximation being done by quasi-interpolation (in the formulation of the algorithm, the quasi- interpolation is replaced by cardinal spline-interpolation). Furthermore, they derive error bounds for the approximation of the original function by the compressed wavelet decompositions, and present the results of some interesting numerical examples.
